The Ballet Academy East (BAE) held their Cherry Blossom Gala on February 25th, 2017 at 873 Broadway. Raising $75,000 will support their programs and abilities to give scholarships.
We were first treated to a lovely dance performance. The 150 attendees of diverse backgrounds enjoyed the fine Japanese themed foods such as sushi and ramen noodle stations along with delicious passed hors d’oeuvres provided by Chef Randy Braunberger of Acquolina Catering and his staff. We also enjoyed Shakuhachi and koto music by the talented musicians Masayo Ishigure and Shoji Mizumoto.
The Ballet Academy East has been an important centre for dance on Manhattan’s Upper East Side since 1979. Julia Dubno, the founder and director of Ballet Academy East was selected by Christine Fokine to run the Fokine Ballet School in 1978. That experience led to the opening of Ballet Academy East in a brownstone on East 79th Street with one small studio in 1979. Now the school has five spacious studios with a world-renowned faculty led by artistic director, Darla Hoover. The organisation is dedicated to helping all children, regardless of financial circumstances, can pursue their passion for dance. This year 40% of their students in levels 2-10 received tuition scholarships through BAE’s Financial Aid and Male Scholarship Programs.
