Outward Bound USA Raises Nearly $700,000 to Benefit

Outward Bound USA National Benefit Dinner 2016 was held on October 18, 2016 at the new Cipriani located at 25 Broadway, in New York City.
Their National Benefit Dinner is Outward Bound USA’s most significant annual fundraiser. This event was a huge success that raised nearly $700,000. The funds raised provides critical funds that supports Outward Bound’s philanthropic work and its network of chartered schools.
Gathered together from various industries, many notable attendees including: bestselling author Michael Lewis; Ira Dizengoff of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP; Tom James of the Teachers College, Columbia University; Laura Kohler of Kohler Co., Mark Hoplamazian of Hyatt Hotels Corporation; plus, artist Michael Arthur and writer Christopher Buckley.
A silent auction was held on various cool gear, getaways, artwork and more!
Emcee this year’s event was Michael Lewis, author of “The Big Short”and “Moneyball” was engaging, creating a beautiful atmosphere. He has fond past experience with the organization. Both of his books about sports became movies, which were nominated for Academy Awards, as did his book about the 2008 financial crisis,“The Big Short.”
This year the organization honoured Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, who has displayed a shared commitment to diversity and inclusion. Since its founding, this global firm has sought to promote diversity and break down barriers to achievement. Its firm culture sees differences as strengths, and the organization actively promotes this value.

We champion these values every day and consider them vital to our success as an organization and as leaders in our field,” said Akin Gump chairperson Kim Koopersmith. “Outward Bound advances these same values and more – through its work with student populations of diverse ages and backgrounds. We are proud to celebrate this newfound and productive relationship.”
Tom James of Provost and Dean of Teachers College and Columbia University, accepting the 2016 Kurt Hahn Award. Named in honour of Outward Bound’s founder, the Kurt Hahn Award is presented annually to a person who exemplifies outstanding service to Outward Bound’s mission to change lives through challenge and discovery and create a more resilient and compassionate world, and who has made a contribution through his or her life’s work on behalf of others while demonstrating Hahn’s ideals and values.
