After waiting for 4 years to hear new material from Frank Ocean, he finally dropped his anticipated album, BLOND, to debuting number #1 on Billboard Two Hundred.
I finally had the chance to listen to BLOND by Frank Ocean; the whole album. This is my first time giving attention to his music. I must say this recent album is a roller coaster of emotions coming out his closet or very hidden, quiet world. Its a fusion of RnB, new age, neo-soul and eclectic sounds.
This is his second studio album. It was released on August 20, 2016, as a timed exclusive on the iTunes Store and Apple Music, and followed the August 19 release of Ocean’s visual album called Endless. The album was initially known as Boys Don’t Cry, which is also the name of his independent record label, and was teased for a July 2015 release, the album suffered several delays and was the subject of widespread media anticipation.
The album features guest vocals from Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Yung Lean, André 3000, Sebastian, James Blake, and Kim Burrell among others, and production from Frank Ocean himself, as well as Pharrell Williams, Tyler, The Creator, Jamie xx, Rostam Batmanglij, Om’Mas Keith, and more. The album was supported by the single “Nikes“, which is one of my favourite tracks on the album. It received widespread acclaim from critics, and charted at number one on the US Billboard 200.
His mother is featured through a clip telling Frank not to do drugs or be associated with anyone who does drugs, as well as that he must always be his true authentic self and never to try and be someone else. It seems like he experienced some series of bad, heartbreaking relationships; people not really understanding who he is or not accepting who he is; it seems like he was truly confused as to his identity in the world or accepting of his own true identity and fitting in.
This album is beautifully made, artistically expressive. Its an album you can listen to for certain moments in your life.
We give BLOND a 4 Star rating
