When BANKS (aka Jillian Rose Banks )  first came onto the music scene, I first heard her song Goddess, and I was hooked into her. Her lyrical flow of dark, deep, and powerful, are stories of self discovery and twisting, broken relationships. Her visual art for each video brings you deeper into her world, giving some sort of escapism that can be difficult for many artists to achieve.

Her second studio album, The Altar, released September 30, 2016 brings you into a darker, deeper layer of BANKS than ever before. The song “Fuck With Myself” she describes her conflict between self-criticism and self-love as the inspiration behind the track. Her other song “Gemini Feed” which was released in the summer, is about understanding ones position in a relationship and the desires and effects in a downward spiral relation breaking apart.

My favourite song on the album and I think it truly sums up the whole album very well is, “To The Hilt”; Hilt, according to means the handle of a sword or dagger. ‘to the Hilt’ means to the maximum extent or degree; completely. And this is exactly the expression of The Altar of giving her all to this relationship, and reflecting back at what could have changed or have been better, as well as all the dreams made together and how it all tumbled to the ground, nothing to gather but the scraps of the relationship on the floor. Such a very deep album, well written and beautifully expressive.

We give THE ALTAR a 5 Star rating    10646235-gold-star10646235-gold-star10646235-gold-star10646235-gold-star10646235-gold-star
