When I heard that Solange Knowles  (yes, the sister of Beyonce. Can we move on, she does have her own identity.) dropped her second studio album, now number #1 in the country on Billboard , A Seat At The Table. I literally stopped whatever I was doing, blocked out all the phones calls, and people coming in and out, put on my Skull-Candy headphones on, hopped onto TIDAL, clicked download and pressed PLAY.

Entered through the first track Rise to the last track Scales… took me through a journey of just living. Living within my world, and the ways of the current world. And what it truly means to me, my life. Solange took me through a garden pathway that unraveled hills, and waterfalls, mountains, streams, sunlight and the setting of the sun. Hearing wisdom spur through the voices of Master P., Ms. Tina Lawson, and Mr. Knowles. These vibes allowed you to understand that you are human, and to take life one moment, one day at a time. Whatever you are going through its going to be okay. Your feelings are true to experience, and to allow yourself to experience them.

When Don’t Touch My Hair came on it expressed everything about wanting to be oneself without all the crap that surrounds how I, a woman of colour, should or shouldn’t do with my own hair, much less my own life! Like the only GOD given creation that grows and does its thing belongs to me and even that, whiteness wants CONTROL of that as well. No, what did you say to me? This hair is MINE, and I will rock it how I feel.

Truly, if you haven’t heard her new album, it’s a MUST for your album collection. Solange has always been a creative, unique spirit with her own ways of expressing her art which at times has not been received well or wrongly compared her to her sister. Solange has always lived to her own rhythm and should be given the massive respect she truly and justly deserves.
