Without music, the world cannot turn.

I am so thrilled and happy about this organization and what they are doing for music and music education. On June, 13, 2016 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City, Education Through Music (ETM) celebrated their 25th Anniversary at its Children Benefit Gala; honouring Steinway & Sons and raised over $900,000.to provide resources and programs of quality music education as a catalyst for academic achievement and general development .We were greeted with sounds of trumpets playing by students of the Bronx Schools District (M.S 355, M.S 180, M.S. 498 and P.S. 76) .

Christine Baranski served as emcee of the 2016 ETM Children's Benefit Gala

This highly anticipated gala was hosted by Tony and Emmy-winning actress and star of the hit TV show The Good Wife, Christine Baranski. They had amazing performances by two Grammy Award – winning artists: jazz trumpet player Chris Botti with longstanding board member and violinist Joshua Bell.

The honouring of Steinway & Sons was a moment. To understand how great this was is to know the connection between ETM and Steinway & Sons. For over 160 years, Steinway & Sons has been dedicated to the ideal of making the finest pianos in the world, creating instruments renowned for their uncompromising craftsmanship and unsurpassed quality. Equal to their commitment to excellence is their unremitting support of music education. In 2015 Steinway & Sons joined Education Through Music (ETM) in its efforts to bring music education to the economically disadvantaged children of New York City. This multi-year philanthropic relationship will enable ETM to expand its school partnerships to reach more NYC children, support music teacher education, and promote the importance of music education in schools.

“It is amazing to see the progress we have made over the past 25 years, from serving a single school with music education to reaching 27,000 students in 48 inner-city schools,” says ETM Executive Director Katherine Damkohler. “With our supporters’ help, we look forward to growing our footprint and partnering with even more schools to serve students with high-quality music education.”

About Education Through Music

After reading sad media stories about the low-quality education New York City students were receiving, Education Through Music founders Edmund Schroeder and Eldon Mayer wanted to take action. After seeing first-hand a school that was utilizing music education to improve educational outcomes, they decided to collaborate in 1991 to provide music education to schools that did not have the resources to teach their children the arts.

Children learn better when music is part of their school routine. It is disappointing that only 59% of New York City public schools do not have a full-time certified music teacher on staff. Also, only 36% of 6th-8th graders reported participating in music classes.
The organization, a 501 (c)(3) since 1991. currently serves nearly 27,000 students of elementary, middle and k-8 schools in 48 inner-city schools in New York City, and reaches another 10,000 children through the work of our licensed affiliate organization in Los Angeles.

Most of the students around 92% are minorities with 90% qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Some of the students they help, around 10% have special needs. Around 16% are students that English language learners.
Their comprehensive, sustainable music education network has strong support of corporations, public policy makers and foundations, including The Music Man Foundation, CMA Foundation, The Jerome L. Greene Foundation, Ford Foundation and D’Addario Foundation.

As little as $150 helps sponsor an entire year of music education for one child.
