Harvest Home held their 4th annual Savor the Season Uptown on May 19th 2016 at the historical Museum of the City of New York. The atmosphere was a beautiful, intimate setting with fine wine, food, delightful desserts, cocktails and liquor. Special guest Chef Frank Maldonado of Sofrito & Sazon was whipping up delicious bites for VIPs and attendees.
There were eight fabulous eateries to try dishes from, which our contributing writer, Mitchell Acks eagerly did. He had the Truffled Spring Pea Ravoli from Community Food & Juice was very tasty and quite different. The Chopped Noodles with Spicy Cumin Lamb was another interesting dish, and Davio’s signature Gnocchi with Bolognese Sauce.
To balance the food were the fine wines from Mattebella Vineyards Tastings and McCall Wines. Ales from Bronx Brewery especially the Rye Ale; the fine flavoured or regular rums from Don Q; plus cocktails like Synergy; and a mixture of Deaths Door Vodka with a cucumber puree and ginger sweetners.
For desserts, the Carrot Cake from Lloyds Carrot Cake and the Apple Bread Budding from Make My Cake; and assorted cookies such as the Chocolate Walnut, a scone that melted in your mouth.
“After 21 years, Harvest Home is not only still here, but we continue to make a difference in New Yorkers’ lives through programs like our Eating for Good Health workshops, which address childhood obesity and improve health outcomes by teaching healthy meal preparation,” says CEO Maritza Owens. “The bottom line is that we are helping people in our community live longer and healthier lives, and Savor the Season Uptown is a celebration of these accomplishments, as well as the collaborations and supporters that make it all possible.”
Honorees at this year’s Savor the Season Uptown event include:
Lifetime Achievement Award: Barbara Brenner, adjunct associate professor of preventive medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. For 23 years, Brenner served as the director of community relations for the Mount Sinai Medical Center and was Mount Sinai’s liaison to organizations and leaders in the northern Manhattan communities of East and Central Harlem. In her role as associate professor of preventive medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Brenner was a co-investigator of studies funded by the National Institutes of Health and the US Centers for Disease Control that tested interventions to prevent and control high rates of diabetes and stroke among Harlem residents. She was also part of a long-term study assessing the relationships between environmental exposures (including chemicals, diet, physical activity, etc.), obesity, and early puberty in girls. She established the first Farmers Market at Mount Sinai Medical Center and has been an advocate for the expansion of additional markets in East Harlem and other low income communities.
NY Sports Legend Award: Erik Coleman, current New York Jets commentator on SNY and retired NFL Safety for the New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions. Coleman became one of the Jets’ most important defenders, cementing his starting role with interceptions in each of his first two NFL games. During his 4 year tenure with the New York Jets, from 2004 to 2007, he started in 45 of 48 regular season games. Coleman moved on to the Falcons for three years in 2008, and then the Lions in 2011 and 2012. After a nine-year NFL career, Coleman retired from playing football with 653 tackles, 11 interceptions, and 35 passes defensed.
About Harvest Home Farmer’s Market
Harvest Home Farmer’s Market, non-profit organization since 1993, dedicated to increasing access to local, farm-fresh produce to residents of some of New York City’s most impoverished and under served communities.
Today, they are one of the largest managers of farmer’s markets in New York City, operating locations throughout the city, and serving more than 250,000 New Yorkers each year that are 30% below the federal poverty level.
The organization helps process over $133,000 in SNAP/EBT benefits and other food subsidies.
They make it possible for more than 1,000 children each year to enjoy supervised physical and sports activities in traffic-free spaces through our summer Play Streets programs. This is more productive than just watching television, videos or other activities.
Their Youth Bucks project offers coupons to children and teens so they can purchase farm-fresh fruits and vegetables at our farmer’s markets.
