What A Night!

This was such an exciting event, raising over $200, 000. on May 16th at the Grand Hyatt in New York City with CANY honouring two amazing stars. TONY® Award Winning Actress and Broadway.com’s 2015 Star of the Year Kelli O’Hara  and Principal and CEO of John V. Lindsay Wildcat Academy Ron Tabano. 

CANY- Creative Alternatives Of New York is the leading non profit organization that is known for its innovative use of drama therapy to help children and adults who have endured trauma to rebuild their lives.We heard their remarkable stories of overcoming diverse situations by some of CANY’s clients who with the help of the organization’s programs, tools and support have created renewed lives.

2016 CANY Honouree Kelli O’Hara , a six-time Tony Award nominee and won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical in 2014 for Bridges of Madison County. Kelli has been nominated various times for the Drama Desk Award, Drama League Award and Outer Critics Circle Award. Andre Bishop,  Producing Artistic Director of Lincoln Center Theater, presented the Leadership Award for Arts & Healing to her.

Next 2016 Honouree  Ron Tabano – Principal and CEO of John V. Lindsay Wildcat Academy, an alternative high school that has been CANY’s partner for 25 years.  This Charter School offers older students a second chance at a high school diploma. in bustling Battery Park. CANY’s Program Director and Drama Therapist,  Meredith Dean presented the Lifetime Achievement to him.

We were all happily surprised by the special  appearances and live performances by Ann Hampton Callaway who opened the night’s festivities with the songs “People” and “Being Alive”. After Kelli O’ Hara accepted her award, she sang “Make Someone Happy”. Closing number was a duet by Cady Huffman and Ann Hampton Callaway  called “Sunny Side of the Street”. 


For over thirty years, Creative Alternatives of New York (CANY) has pioneered the use of drama therapy groups to help empower people who have endured trauma to rebuild their lives. Founded at Department of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai Hospital, CANY now works with leading social service agencies, special schools, and community centers serving over 1,000 children and adults in the greater New York area annually. Cultivated over years of clinical and artistic practice, CANY has developed its own unique trauma-informed drama therapy model to help clients move beyond their past and into a future of hope and promise.
