May 09, 2016 – The Center For Arts Education 3rd Annual Arts Jam 2016 Director, Larry Carlthan leading the dancers, and band of musicians all from West Prep Academy, NY- by AnnieWattAgency.com – Society Event Photography

This event was super special to attend. I know everyone has watched at least once the show Inside Actor’s Studio, for this event honoured creator and host James Lipton as well as New York Public School Principal, Carland Washington.

This year’s annual Arts Jam fundraiser was held at the fabulous City Winery in New York on May 9, 2016. With 300 guests in attendance , we were treated to an exquisite selection of wines provided by Kobrand with amazing  hors d’oeuvres to sample. Plus, performances by Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist Jason Robert Brown and the students from West Prep Academy’s Marching Band directed by Larry Carthan. Keeping it flowing, jazzy musical vibes was provided by the  Hollis Headrick Trio.

Arts Jam was co-chaired by Lawrence Benenson, Fiona Cibani, Alvaro Leal, Abigail Scheuer, Michael Spalter and Amanda Richman Wurtz. Associate co-chairs included Marjorie Altschuler and Venk Varadan.

The Center For Arts Education (CAE) first honoured principal Carland Washington, New York Public School principal at West Prep Academy School , a 6-8 magnet school, since 2014.

Next, the CAE honoured Creator and Host of Inside Actor’s Studio and Founder of the Actors Studio Drama School, James Lipton. He has received various awards including: a three-time Producer Guild Award nominee,  three honorary PhD’s, recipient of the French Republic’s Chevalier de L’ordre des Arts et des Lettewa, inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame, and awarded the Lifetime Achievement Emmy.  James was very concerned about the limited resources for the arts. For example in Hamburg, Germany the government spends approximately $1.63 billion  in arts compared to US  government spending $146 million according to the NEA- The National Endowment For The Arts. Basically Germany spends $20. on a person and the US spends $0.41 cents on a person.

Quite astonishing!

The event was splendid, but what I walked away with is the importance of art in school, in education but also in one’s life. To see how it affects the kids that attend West Prep is such a great example of CAE, that absolutely there’s so much more to be done.

Getting an art education can help students in different ways such as: Four times(4x) more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, lower rates of behavioural problems, higher attendance rates, and higher graduation rates. According to NEA’S new report it is very important for at-risk students that have access to the arts also tend to have better academic results, better career opportunities, and more civic engagement.
