Q. When we built our house several years ago, one of the must-haves was a brick porch with matching columns and steps? It gives the house great curb appeal, but we've started to notice a white, powdery substance on some of the bricks. How do we get rid of it?

A. That substance is called efflorescence and it happens for several reasons. You can remove the efflorescence and minimize the possibility of it returning.
